HB Takes Home Prestigious Prize
(31 August)—Galway-based mattress maker Hannigan Bedding (HB) has been named winner of the Davies Product Innovation Award.
HB was selected for its Foamax2 mattress. Made with a foam material that is less expensive to produce than its traditional equivalents, the Foamax2 is also more durable and resistant to pressure.
The Davies Product Innovation Awards are presented to small companies in Ireland that develop novel technologies used in commercial products.
HB President Peter Mallon was certain that his company would clear the first stage of the competition, a review of product documentation, even though more than 80 percent of the submissions are typically rejected at that stage.
“We knew we had a great product and that we had a good chance to become a finalist,” said Mallon at yesterday’s award ceremony. “But winning the top prize was a pleasant surprise. We didn’t want to get our hopes up, as there were some exciting new inventions in the competition.’’
Along with being recognized in several major industry publications, HB will receive a €20,000 award. The second-place prize of €10,000 will go to food producer KalePro of Limerick for its kale-based breakfast cereal, and the €5,000 third-place prize will be awarded to a Waterford-based start-up called Runnabrog for its innovative running shoe.
The Foamax2 will be available in select stores nationwide starting in November.
